Count down to Vertigo

Lace Up

Another drastic change on a DC classic character. When I first seen the new 52 concept I was like,  WHAT!?!

Then my son looked at him and said
" They got him looking like MGK "

???    um mm.....who is that?

He's a Hip Hop artist. He flips open his laptop and shows me who MGK is.  I'm an Outkast,  Scarface,  Wu Tang kinda guy. But when I heard the kid rhyme it changed my whole outlook.  Wait wait wait..... For my man to make that cross reference and connect  the new outfit to what's currently going on right now  it made me think that maybe DC's attempt to make their characters current might not be to far off from right and what works for the new comic book readers out there.

I know your head is hurting right now like this guy. But right now the new younger ( out of character ) Green Arrow is pretty popular.  Dale and Gemini seem to like the show as well. So making Count Vertigo a younger different version might just connect this new 52 with DC's actual target audience.?.

For me,  the Young justice version has been the coolest version of the character yet. But that's just me.

If they ( DC ) can make this new tough guy 52 Vertigo work I'm going to have to applaud this one. Cause what they did with my man Bronze Tiger's new look is criminal. I would have taken  new Vertigo's  outfit with a bandolier and broad swords to a fight every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I'm still going Indy until the real BT comes back, but if we're still going to traverse this genre you better

  1. great, another brilliant move by DC. Vertigo is now a homeless guy who's a meth addict.

  2. Yeah I don't feel like the old DC is coming back, but maybe a few books could run as Earth 3's or something. I just now I can't read the new DC apart from two titles, and I can't buy back issues now because I don't think they are relevant.

As for GA, I was surprised. In a recent comic store freebie there was a book promoting all DC's paperback collections. All the big characters had at least a double page spread featuring their own collections, and Green Arrow was one of them, not Wonder Woman or Aquaman!

    Times they are a changing...

    1. Dylan told us the truth didn't he? GA is on the push board at DC. Younger Batman esque vigilante with his own TV show. He has membership in the league, his own title and the DC market machine behind him. I'm surprised he only got two pages.

  3. yeah you're right Dan. and it's especially evident when it comes to The Suicide Squad. there's no indication that Boomerang is coming back to the story line and we now know how badly DC has fucked over two other Squad regulars to say nothing about them not being even remotely affiliated with Waller or The Squad. anybody who's still picking up this book thinking it will ever get back to being anything like the Ostrander series isn't just in denial but totally delusional. Dan was the smart one to drop this book after issue #2. it wasn't till issue #4 that i started having some misgivings about it but i really wish i had dropped it a bit sooner then later.

    1. This isn't just in the Suicide Squad title. The character changes are state wide (in every DC book) almost no character is the same as we know it. I was reading several of the new 52's waiting for the Bronze Tiger to come back being the character that is most important to me. And BT shows up wrong.

It is some good 52 titles out there. I just can't read em any longer because they messed up my guy. The biggest problem with this new movement is that the proper respect isn't shown to key members of this super hero fraternity. What I will say is their biggest failure has also been their biggest success. the Tiger just happen to be a casualty of war.

  4. You know what? I honestly actually like this revamped look. Like Omega's son said, it had that MGK look to it, he looks hipper and more contemporary. He looks exactly, or really close to maybe how he should look were created in today's time period. Yeah I know, usually I'm with you guys in hating the new looks of beloved characters, but with the growing influence of movies and video games on character designs, or in some cases re-designs, this look isn't that bad. Now we all know next to nothing about his characterization, so that could still be a dud, but the visuals aren't that bad.

And finally, unless something drastic happens, the old DCU isn't coming back, no matter how many of us want it to. The younger generations finally won out on that one.

I hate to say it, but it's not coming back. We're going to have to find that piece of the comic world that we can we can deal with and let the future unfold.
